Dubai debate on the net

There's a sad lack of thoughtful comment on the net regarding the rise/fall of Dubai but if you click here you'll be taken to a forum debate that's thought provoking, attacks the intellectual point rather than the poster and, best of all, is completely without contributions from the "If you don't like it, get out" brigade.

The initial article is from an architect and the comments on Dubai are, to put it mildly, scathing eg here's the first paragraph:

"Short of opening a Radio Shack in an Amish town, Dubai is the world’s worst business idea, and there isn’t even any oil. Imagine proposing to build Vegas in a place where sex and drugs and rock and roll are an anathema. This is effectively the proposition that created Dubai - it was a stupid idea before the crash, and now it is dangerous. "

No matter what reaction you may have, its worth reading the full article and continuing through the replies.

  1. Carolynn, I read through the article and was frankly, turned off by the opinions of the writer halfway through. The rant was simply a jambalaya of lofty phrases and complex similes.

The discussion however, was another thing altogether. One commentator Tom_S (the 12th one) put down his defense of Dubai rather well I thought.

See it however you want to, Dubai is not one to fail and neither is it completely artifice.

  2. Thanks Casey. I thought it was a link worth passing on as its one of the most interesting forum discussions on Dubai that I've seen. The postings reflect every possible shade of opinion and while there are strongly held views it doesn't slide into a slanging match like so many other forum "discussions".

  3. I thought so too Carolynn. I liked the discussion so much that I went and blogged about its nature on my online marketing blog! If only more discussions could be this rational & polite! - Edward J
